What is an Autism?
Autism is a lifelong developmental difference that can affect communication, social interaction, sensory processing, routines and how someone experiences the world. Every autistic person is different.
When might you seek advice?
You may want to seek advice if differences in communication, interaction, sensory needs, routines, emotional regulation, learning or daily life are having a noticeable impact.
How do you start?
Begin by speaking with your child’s teacher, SENCO, GP, health visitor or another professional who knows them well. Ask what support can be provided now and which assessment route may be relevant.
What should you prepare?
Gather examples from home and school, details of strengths and difficulties, support already tried, relevant reports, communication records and notes about sensory or emotional needs.
What does Autism support involve?
Autism support should be based on the individual child’s strengths and needs. It may include communication support, sensory adjustments, predictable routines, emotional regulation strategies, reasonable adjustments and help with learning or daily activities.
Does my child need a diagnosis to receive support?
A child does not need a formal autism diagnosis before their school can respond to identified needs. Speak to the teacher or SENCO about the difficulties your child is experiencing and ask what SEN support or reasonable adjustments can be put in place now. North Northamptonshire’s Local Offer also states that a diagnosis is not required to receive support
How can I ask school for support?
Arrange a conversation with your child’s teacher or SENCO. Share specific examples, ask what support is already in place and agree what will happen next. Ask when progress will be reviewed and keep a written record of meetings, actions and outcomes
Describe your child’s strengths and difficulties
Share examples from home and school
Ask what adjustments can be made
Agree intended outcomes
Set a review date
Keep notes of what was agreed
Which assessment route may apply?
• Assessment routes can vary according to your child’s age, circumstances and local arrangements. A family may begin by speaking to a GP, school, SENCO, health visitor or another professional who knows the child. In some areas, the school may need to contribute to or make the referral. Independent assessments are also available, but families should check what the assessment includes and whether it will be accepted by the organisations they need to work with
Which local authority area applies?
The correct local support route depends on where your child lives.
West Northamptonshire: use the West Northamptonshire Local Offer and SENDIASS service.
North Northamptonshire: use the North Northamptonshire Local Offer and SENDIASS service.
Both areas provide local SEND information, although assessment and referral arrangements may differ. North Northamptonshire SENDIASS provides free, confidential and impartial support to children, young people and their families.
What can help while waiting for an assessment?
Your child should not have to wait for a diagnosis before current needs are considered. While waiting, you can:
ask school what support can be provided now
identify sensory triggers and helpful adjustments
use predictable routines where useful
record concerns and strategies that work
gather observations from home and school
seek appropriate support for communication, sleep, anxiety or emotional regulation
use reputable free guidance and local services
