NHS and private routes
NHS assessment is free and referral arrangements vary by age and area. Waiting times and pathway steps can change. Private assessment is paid for by the family and may offer more choice, but it does not automatically replace NHS follow-up or guarantee acceptance by every organisation.
Support does not require a diagnosis
Schools have duties to identify and respond to special educational needs. Families can ask for reasonable adjustments and SEN Support based on communication, sensory, learning, emotional-regulation or participation needs while an assessment is considered or awaited.
What may an assessment involve?
A careful assessment may include developmental history, parent and school information, direct observation, structured clinical tools, discussion with the child where appropriate and consideration of alternative explanations. The format should be adapted to age, communication and individual needs.
Multidisciplinary assessment
Some assessments involve more than one clinician, for example clinical psychology, paediatrics, psychiatry or speech and language therapy. Ask why each professional is involved and whether the approach follows current recognised guidance; multidisciplinary does not simply mean multiple appointments.
Qualifications and registration to check
Ask for the clinicians’ names, roles, experience with children and professional registration. Depending on role this may include HCPC, GMC or NMC registration. Check registers directly and ask who holds clinical responsibility for the final diagnostic opinion.
What should the written report include?
Clarify whether the fee includes a full report describing evidence considered, observations, diagnostic reasoning, strengths, needs and practical recommendations. Ask whether school feedback, a parent meeting, corrections of factual errors and a follow-up discussion are included.
Will others accept the assessment?
Schools, NHS teams and local authorities should consider relevant professional evidence, but SEND Lantern cannot promise how any organisation will respond. Before booking, ask the provider about its standards and ask the organisation you need to work with what evidence it normally requires.
Questions before booking and paying
Ask for the full cost, deposit and cancellation terms; which appointments and questionnaires are included; whether extra reports cost more; likely timescales; how safeguarding or additional needs are handled; and what happens if the evidence does not support an autism diagnosis. Cost varies with clinician mix, complexity, travel and report scope, so no price estimate is invented here.

North Northamptonshire route
Families in Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Rushden and surrounding North Northamptonshire areas should check the current NHS and Local Offer routes for their home address. Private providers may cover a wider area, but travel, school observation and follow-up arrangements vary.
West Northamptonshire route
Families in Northampton, Daventry, Towcester, Brackley and surrounding West Northamptonshire areas should use West Northamptonshire information for public routes. A provider saying it covers Northamptonshire does not necessarily mean it offers in-school work across both council areas.
