Occupational therapy support explained

Occupational therapy is not just about medical treatment; it is about finding practical ways to help your child navigate their daily tasks with more confidence and ease.

Quick answer

Occupational therapy helps people participate in everyday activities or occupations, such as dressing, eating, handwriting, play, self-care, school routines and community life. An occupational therapist assesses functional barriers and may recommend skill-building, environmental changes, equipment or strategies.

What this means

For children and young people, occupational therapy may consider motor coordination, sensory processing, fatigue, independence, routines and how the environment affects participation. The assessment should begin with a functional question rather than a promise to fix handwriting or sensory behaviour. Recommendations should be practical, explained and reviewed.

OT is highly practical. It focuses on the bridge between a child's internal needs and the external environment, helping them adapt to tasks that feel overwhelming or difficult to coordinate.

Consult your school's SENCO or GP regarding the NHS OT referral pathway. Many strategies can be implemented immediately with basic guidance, often without needing a long-term clinical intervention.

Questions to ask

Which everyday activities are being assessed? • How will the child’s goals and environment be included? • What follow-up is provided after the report?

Local Northamptonshire route

Access may be through NHS, school-commissioned or private routes and can change. Check the current pathway and the relevant North Northamptonshire or West Northamptonshire Local Offer. School should still consider practical adjustments while a child waits.

Professional help is available if you need it

Occupational therapy is useful when functional participation is the main question. Private assessment is optional; check full fees, registration and whether recommended equipment or follow-up costs extra.

What happens next?

Agree which recommendations will be tried, who will support them and when functional impact will be reviewed. Ask for alternatives if a strategy is impractical in the child’s setting.
