Social communication support
Every child interacts with the world differently. There is no 'right' way to be social; instead, focus on supporting your child to develop confidence and skills that help them connect with others comfortably.
Quick answer
Social communication support helps a child understand and express meaning in interaction, including conversation, inference, non-literal language, perspective, boundaries and repair when communication breaks down. The goal should be effective, authentic communication—not training a child to hide harmless differences.
What this means
Start with situations that matter to the child: joining a game, asking for help, understanding classroom language or managing misunderstandings. Consider language, autism, ADHD, anxiety, hearing and the communication style of adults and peers. Support may involve environmental changes as well as direct teaching.
Observe how your child interacts in different environments. Are they comfortable in small groups but overwhelmed in large ones? Understanding these preferences helps to find the right support that doesn't put unnecessary pressure on them.
Explore school-based programmes, social groups, or clubs available in your community. These often offer the best opportunities for natural development, supplemented by advice from the Local Offer or SENDIASS.
Questions to ask
Which situation does the child want to make easier? • What can communication partners change? • Does the approach respect the child’s natural communication style?

Professional help is available if you need it
A speech and language therapist can assess social communication where needed. Private therapy is optional; check HCPC registration and whether the approach respects neurodiversity and the child’s consent.
What happens next?
Share successful communication supports with relevant adults and revise goals that encourage masking, compliance or unwanted eye contact rather than meaningful participation.
