Behaviour and unmet SEND needs

It is common to feel frustrated, but remember that challenging behaviour is not a reflection of your parenting or the child's 'bad' intent. It is simply their way of expressing an unmet need.

Quick answer

Behaviour may be a sign that communication, learning, sensory, emotional or physical needs are not being understood or supported. It is not proof of SEND, but repeated patterns should prompt assessment of the child and the environment rather than relying only on discipline.

What this means

Describe exactly what happens and examine the demands around it. A child may be overwhelmed, unable to communicate, avoiding an inaccessible task, seeking regulation or responding to anxiety, pain or peer difficulty. Different causes can look similar, so avoid assuming intent. Support should address the likely barrier and teach safer ways to communicate or cope.

Collect evidence of when and where the behaviour happens. Is it during transition times? When the environment is too busy? This information is vital for the school and other professionals to help them create a supportive plan.

Before moving to external assessments, work with your school to explore in-house adaptations. The Local Offer and SENDIASS can provide guidance on how to request these adjustments and identify if there is a deeper underlying need.

Questions to ask

What need might the behaviour be communicating? • Was the task or environment accessible? • Which support will change before consequences are increased?
